general questions about our citizens information & advice bureau

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Citizens Information & Advice Bureau do?

We’re a local non-profit that gives free, impartial, face-to-face advice on everything from benefits, debt and housing to health, education, consumer issues and small-business support for people across Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre. Our services are free and always will be.

Is your advice really free?

Yes. All guidance, form-filling, appeals help and follow-up support are 100 % free – we never take a cut of any grant or benefit you receive.

Who can use the service?

Any local resident or business owner based in or serving the Blackpool, Fylde or Wyre communities can pop in or book an appointment – there are no income or age restrictions.

When and where is the walk-in surgery – and do I need an appointment?

Drop in seven days a week, 9 am – 6 pm, at 27 St Anne’s Road, Blackpool FY4 2AP. You can just walk in, but using our online calendar lets you pick a quieter slot and cut waiting time.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Any letters, bills, benefit decisions or ID you have. For business queries, bring proof of trading (e.g. company number or recent invoices) so we can check grant eligibility.

Do you help local businesses as well as households?

Absolutely. We can check for start-up loans, energy-efficiency grants and – new for 2025 – our Digital Resilience Grant Fund that pays 80 % of the cost of upgrading your online presence.

What is the Digital Resilience Grant Fund?

It’s a scheme that helps micro and small firms future-proof their websites, booking systems and branding so they stay visible in an AI-driven market – and you never repay the money because it’s a grant, not a loan.

Am I eligible for the Digital Resilience Grant?

You must operate in Blackpool, Fylde or Wyre, have less than 10 employees, and not already have similar funding. Sole traders and home-based businesses are welcome.

Do I have to pay anything toward the grant?

The fund covers 80 % of approved project costs; you contribute the remaining 20 % once you accept the offer. There is nothing to repay afterwards.

How do I apply?

Book a free 15-minute eligibility check (in person or online). We gather the paperwork, submit the application with you, and you get a decision within 48 hours.

Is my information kept confidential?

Yes – we never share your details without permission, and we only contact you in the way you choose (email, text or phone).
